Meet our new Research Officer, Tania Skewis! Originally from Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast in South-east Queensland, Tania brings a deep appreciation for our natural landscapes to her role at GHHP.
Tania studied a Bachelor of Environmental Science, focusing on Water Resource Management, at CQUniversity, after which her interest in research led her to pursue a Master of Applied Science, also at CQUniversity. Her research utilised data from fish collected for the Gladstone Harbour Report Card to assess the viability of fluctuating asymmetry as an indicator of fish health—an experience that significantly shaped her understanding of Gladstone’s local ecosystems.
Before joining GHHP, Tania worked casually at CQUniversity as a Research Worker on various projects. She also has a long history in hospitality, currently moonlighting at a surf club on the Sunshine Coast on weekends. This balance has taught her the importance of community engagement, which she’s eager to bring to her position at GHHP.
Working for GHHP combines Tania’s love of science with her passion for community involvement. While focusing on one aspect of Gladstone Harbour’s health during her Masters studies, she now has the opportunity to see how the entire report card is produced and contribute to that vital process. She’s thrilled to help raise community awareness about GHHP’s work and get involved in science project activities.
Having spent years studying in the Central Queensland region, Tania has developed a special connection to Gladstone. The friendly community and relaxed vibe have made it feel like a second home. She’s made great friends here and cherishes the memories she’s built while working on her research.
Tania looks forward to embarking on this new journey at GHHP and contributing to our shared mission of enhancing the health of our precious environment!
